Choosing a Format

The key issue in deciding what sort of book you need is defining the three core elements: who is the target audience, what are the key messages and how do you want to project them.

Your choice of book style is determined by a range of factors which we have outlined in How to Publish Your Book.

While there is infinite variety there are some basic features which may assist you.

Page extent
Books can range in size from 64 pages up to 440 pages although most books would be between 128 and 224 pages.

Format
The format of the book is also infinitely variable although there are 'standard sizes' (which vary depending on the printer used) which are more economical to print.

Books can be bound with a hard or soft cover and both forms of binding can be performed with the same print run.

Print run
Because of the set-up time required for printing it is generally not economic to print less than 1,000 books. At Focus we have produced books for our clients between 1,000 and 54,000 copies.

What sort of book can you publish?
You can publish any type, format and style of book you want but the key question to ask is what type of book would meet your objectives? Focus works with companies during the initial stages of their book project to take them through the key issues involved with deciding what type of book best fulfills their objectives (see How to Publish Your Book).

There are usually several factors which impact on what sort of book you can publish. These are:

  • budget
  • timeframe
  • internal resources
  • management time available
  • objectives
  • preference for on-shore or off-shore printing
  • publishing knowledge.

Focus is committed to the principle that each company has specific and often unique objectives it wishes to achieve with its corporate book. Therefore, each book project is unique.

We have produced a wide variety of books, including:

  • large format, glossy books - Qantas, Inter-Continental, Crown;
  • elegant, more traditional histories - Coal & Allied, the Australian Stock Exchange, Corinthian Doors, the NSW Police Association, St Peters Lutheran College, Alcatel,
  • stylish, marketing-orientated books - MBF, The Salvation Army, The Regent of Sydney, the Sheraton Wentworth.
  • marketing books - Blackmores, Traveland, the Gabba.
